Isle Madame sits just off the southeastern coast of Cape Breton, a low, sea‑level Acadian island shaped by centuries of fishing, shipbuilding, and stubborn cultural survival. First used by Mi’kmaq families and later visited seasonally by Basque fishermen in the 16th and 17th centuries, the island’s permanent European roots began in the early 1700s when Acadian families settled at Petit‑de‑Grat and Arichat.
